Under a Volcano

by mudrhetoric

The heat oppresses
And I’m overcome with a sense of malaise
Listless, I lay on the ground
And daydream of living under a volcano.

My legs are heavy logs
Caught in quicksand
Movement is curtailed
As even lifting liquid to my lips is a chore.

A cabana shirt
Drenched in sweat
Sticks to my body as a
Stale wind moves nothing.

Diseased flesh and the swell of rotting fruit.
Is this love?

In the distance is the mirage of an ocean.
My mind slips toward it.
I’ve betrayed my flesh.
I cannot awake.
